The Impact of Summer Heat on Skin

High temperatures in summer can be extremely harmful to the skin. Studies show that just ten minutes of intense sun exposure can age the skin by ten days, and 68% of people develop their first wrinkle during the summer. Therefore, summer is a crucial season for anti-aging skincare. Taking good care of your skin during this time can set a strong foundation for skincare throughout the year. What is "Thermal Aging"? Thermal aging refers to DNA damage caused by high temperatures. Skin aging is closely related to collagen and elastin. Typically, the skin's temperature is slightly lower than the body's, around 31-32°C. However, under intense UV radiation and high heat, various cells secrete matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which excessively degrade the extracellular matrix. This DNA damage causes collagen and elastin to deteriorate, leading to skin aging, decreased elasticity, and increased wrinkles. Differences Between "Thermal Aging" and "Photoaging" Photoaging is caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation and sunlight. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin, transforming collagen and elastin, resulting in rapid loss of skin elasticity, dryness, and more wrinkles. Thermal aging is mainly due to temperature. Many people focus on sun protection and whitening in summer but often overlook the impact of heat on the skin. This explains why even with sun protection, the results may not be satisfactory—thermal aging is the culprit. Why Combat "Thermal Aging"? Combating thermal aging helps prevent the growth of wrinkles. Direct sunlight for 15-20 minutes at noon in summer can raise skin temperature above 40°C, leaving marks of thermal aging on the skin. Factors Causing Thermal Aging 1. High-Intensity UV Rays: UV rays are classified into UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVA and UVB commonly damage the skin and accelerate aging. UVA reaches the dermis, damaging cells and activating melanin, causing the skin to darken. UVB directly damages the epidermis, leading to redness, dryness, itching, and peeling. 2. Prolonged High Temperatures: Summer temperatures often exceed 30°C, with perceived temperatures up to 40°C. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can make the skin feel hot, dry, and sensitive, leading to sagging, spots, and wrinkles. 3. Loss of Skin Moisture: In high temperatures, the skin secretes a lot of sweat to cool down. The evaporation of sweat from the skin surface takes away underlying moisture, accelerating the formation of dry and fine lines. How to Combat Thermal Aging To combat thermal aging, use different methods at different stages. Hot skin not only feels uncomfortable but also accelerates oxidation, oiliness, acne, blemishes, and redness. To quickly cool down the skin in summer, try these methods: - Cooling Sprays: Cooling sprays are direct and effective. The fine mist from pressurized nozzles evaporates on the skin, taking away heat and providing a cooling effect. Carry a small bottle of cooling facial mist when going out for the same effect. - Soothing Masks: Applying masks is an effective way to soothe, hydrate, and calm the skin. In summer, use simple ingredient masks focused on hydration and soothing. The skin will feel cool instantly, and a 15-20 minute application will "force" the skin to absorb enough water, making the stratum corneum healthy. Freeze-dried masks are recommended. - Physical Sun Protection: Both thermal and photoaging stem from UV rays, ultimately leading to skin aging. However, thermal aging is easier to combat; just keep the skin from getting too hot. Research suggests that the ideal skin temperature is about 31°C, 6°C lower than body temperature (37°C). Thus, comfort is key to preventing thermal aging. Apply sunscreen, use parasols, hats, and sunglasses when going out to combat aging effectively. In summary, summer skincare involves not just sun protection but also cooling strategies.
